Nehemiah: Lessons in Leadership

Rather than acting rashly on his own, Nehemiah went to God in prayer. Nehemiah knew that God had placed him in
the perfect place to help, but he also waited for God’s timing. Nehemiah brings in partners who are inspired with the
same passion that he has.

Nehemiah rebuilt the wall with many teams, each rebuilding the section of wall that guarded their homes. He took on the responsibilities of leadership while eschewing the privileges. Instead he served the people of Jerusalem and took part in all elements of the work. At no point did Nehemiah stop praying in order to seek God’s will and direction.

Nehemiah remained focused on his mission and did not allow himself to be distracted by opponents who would not share in the work. When outside armies threatened, he would not let his opponents disrupt his work. As he carried out his mission, Nehemiah refused to let surrounding rulers tell him who he was and what his calling was.

When the wall and gates are complete, the people gather in a great celebration for all the work that has been done. They pledge themselves to be devoted to God in response to God’s great faithfulness to them in guarding and guiding them through the building process. Finally, all the work complete, they get back to the work of worshipping God and being God’s people.
