When You Can't Hold On Anymore

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 ESV)

Main Point: When our strength fails and we can no longer hold onto Jesus, we discover that He has been holding onto us all along.

There will come moments in your Christian life when you feel like you can’t hold on anymore. The struggle against sin seems overwhelming. The pain of loss feels unbearable. Doubts creep in, and your faith feels fragile. In these moments, you might think that your weakening grip means you’re losing your salvation.

But here’s the beautiful truth of the gospel: your salvation was never dependent on your ability to hold onto Jesus. It’s dependent on His ability to hold onto you. When your grip weakens, His grip strengthens. When your faith falters, His faithfulness remains constant. When you feel like you’re slipping away, you discover that you’re actually held secure in His hands.

This is the difference between a works-based religion and grace-based salvation. In works-based religion, your eternal security depends on your performance. In grace-based salvation, your eternal security depends on God’s performance. Jesus took your sin and suffering to the cross. He bore the punishment you deserved. He rose from the dead to guarantee your eternal life. None of that depends on your strength—it all depends on His completed work.

Application: Rest in Christ’s grip on you rather than worrying about your grip on Him during times of spiritual weakness. When have you felt your faith was weakening? What evidence shows that God’s grip on you is secure?

Prayer:
Thank You that my salvation depends on Your grip on me, not my grip on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
