Matthew 1. 19

The Righteous Man Without Control

Scripture: “And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly” (Matthew 1.19)

MAIN POINT: Even our best righteousness cannot control what God is doing in our lives.

Joseph was exactly the kind of man you’d want in a crisis. Matthew describes him as righteous, just, good. When confronted with Mary’s pregnancy, he didn’t react impulsively. He considered it carefully. His solution was compassionate: divorce Mary quietly rather than expose her to disgrace. By all human standards, Joseph was making the right choice.

But here’s the truth: Joseph’s righteousness, his careful consideration, his compassionate plan—none of it mattered. God was working out a story so much bigger than Joseph could see. The titular head of his household was not actually in charge. God was.

This confronts our deepest illusion: that we are the central figures in our stories. We believe that with enough righteousness and planning, we can control our circumstances. Joseph’s experience reveals otherwise. The good news? The One who actually controls everything loves you perfectly.

Reflection: Our lack of control isn’t a problem when the One in control is “God with us” and “God for us.” What plan might God be disrupting for a greater purpose? How does knowing God is in control change your anxiety?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I confess I often try to control my life through careful planning and righteous behavior. Help me trust that You’re working out a story bigger than I can imagine, and that Your control is better than mine. In Your Name, Amen.
