Luke 18. 15

The Real Squanderer

Scripture: “And they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. When the disciples saw it, they rebuked them” (Luke 18:15).

Major Point: Jesus “squanders” heaven’s riches on the unworthy, including us.

If we’re looking for someone who truly squanders riches, we need look no further than Jesus Himself. The Pharisees certainly saw it that way—watching Him waste God’s blessings on tax collectors, sinners, and society’s outcasts. From their perspective, Jesus was being reckless with holy things, throwing away divine resources on people who didn’t deserve them.

But Jesus’ “squandering” was actually the most purposeful spending in history. Every healing, every meal with sinners, every moment of compassion was an investment in souls that heaven valued infinitely. When the disciples tried to turn away children, Jesus rebuked them and welcomed the little ones. When others saw waste, Jesus saw worth.

The prophet Amos spoke of those who “swear by the Guilt of Samaria” (Amos 8:14), trusting in false gods instead of the true God who provides. The Pharisees made the opposite mistake—they worshiped the true God but couldn’t believe He would lavish His love so freely on the undeserving.

The ultimate picture of divine squandering came at Calvary, where soldiers gambled for Jesus’ earthly possessions while He prayed for their forgiveness. Even in agony, Jesus was spending heaven’s mercy on the very people who were killing Him. This is our God—prodigal in His love, reckless in His mercy, squandering heaven’s riches on sinners like us.

Reflection: Jesus “squanders” heaven’s riches on unworthy people, including us. How has Jesus “wasted” His blessings on you? How does understanding God’s prodigal love change your perspective on others?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for squandering heaven’s riches on unworthy sinners like us. Help us to be generous with Your love toward others. In Your precious name, Amen.
