Luke 10.42b

A deeply rooted oak tree with strong branches reaching toward heaven, set against a backdrop of changing seasons, symbolizing the eternal nature of God's promises that remain constant through all of life's changes.

Scripture: “Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10.42b, ESV)

Mary’s choice to listen to Jesus gave her something eternal – the promises of God that cannot be lost, stolen, or destroyed. Unlike the meal Martha was preparing, which would be consumed and forgotten, the words Mary heard would remain with her forever, shaping her identity and empowering her future service.

This “good portion” represents our inheritance in Christ – forgiveness, acceptance, and the assurance of eternal life. These gifts do not depend on our performance or productivity. They cannot be earned through service or lost through failure. They are ours by grace through faith, secured by Christ’s work on the cross.

For those whose lives are filled with temporary things – crops that can fail, equipment that breaks down, relationships that disappoint – this promise offers incredible comfort. While our earthly labors are important, they are not our ultimate source of security or identity. Our true treasure is found in our relationship with Christ.

This doesn’t make our daily work meaningless. Rather, it frees us to work without the crushing weight of having to prove our worth through our accomplishments. When we know we are loved unconditionally by God, we can serve others with joy and peace, knowing that our identity is secure regardless of the outcome of our efforts.

Application: What aspects of your life feel temporary or uncertain? How does knowing that your relationship with Christ is eternal change your perspective on these concerns? Consider how this security might free you to serve with greater joy and less anxiety.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you that your promises to us are eternal and cannot be taken away. Help us to find our identity in what you have done for us, not in what we accomplish. Amen.
