The Heart of Hospitality

Scripture: “Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.” (Luke 10.38, ESV)
When Jesus arrived at Martha’s home, she immediately opened her door and her heart. Her first instinct was to serve, to make her guests comfortable, to show love through action. This mirrors the generous spirit we see throughout rural communities – neighbors helping neighbors, church members bringing meals to families in need, farmers sharing equipment during harvest.
Martha’s desire to serve came from a good place. She understood that love expresses itself through deeds, not just words. When someone important visits your home, you naturally want to honor them with your best efforts. This reflects God’s design for us – we are created to serve others and show love through our actions.
Yet Martha’s story teaches us something crucial about the balance between serving and being served. While her hospitality was commendable, she was about to learn that even the most well-intentioned service can become a burden when it’s not rooted in the right foundation.
Application: Today, consider how you show hospitality and love to others. Are your acts of service flowing from a heart at peace, or are they driven by anxiety and the need to prove yourself? Ask God to help you serve from joy rather than obligation.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of hospitality and the desire to serve others. Help us to welcome you into our homes and hearts with genuine love. Show us how to serve with joy rather than anxiety. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
