Matthew 3. 17

The Father's Declaration

Scripture: And behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3.17)

MAIN POINT: At Jesus’ baptism, God revealed the identity of His Son for all the world to know.

We are in the season of Epiphany—when the Church celebrates what God has made known. And what a revelation this was! The heavens opened. The Spirit descended. The Father spoke. The Trinity was revealed: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit united in the mission of salvation.

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” These words identified Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah, the hope of Israel and of the world. Such things angels longed to understand (1 Peter 1.10–12).

Yet even with this revelation, we still see in part. As Paul wrote, “For now we see in a mirror dimly… now I know in part” (1 Corinthians 13.12). We know Jesus is God’s Son. We know He died and rose for us. But the full glory remains veiled until that final day. Until then, we walk by faith in what has been revealed, trusting that what remains hidden is safe in the Father’s hands.

Reflection: God has revealed enough for us to trust Him completely, even while much remains beyond our sight. What has God revealed to you that gives you confidence in His love? How does the Father’s declaration over Jesus affect how you see yourself as His child?

PRAYER: Father in heaven, thank You for revealing Your beloved Son to me. Help me to live in the light of what You have shown me, trusting You with what remains unseen. Through Christ my Lord. Amen.
