Malachi 4. 1

The Day of the Lord Is Coming

Scripture: “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.” (Malachi 4:1, ESV)

MAIN POINT: The coming day of the Lord will bring both judgment for the wicked and healing for those who fear His name.

The prophet Malachi speaks of a day “burning like an oven”—a day of divine judgment when all evil will be consumed. This is the same future Jesus describes in Luke 21: a time when the structures of this world will crumble and all that is hidden will be revealed. It’s a terrifying vision, but only if we stop there.

Malachi continues: “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings” (Malachi 4:2). For those who trust in the Lord, the day of judgment is also the day of ultimate healing. Every wound will be mended. Every tear will be wiped away. Every injustice will be made right. The same fire that consumes evil will purify and renew those who belong to God.

This is why we must look through the violence and judgment to see Christ. Yes, a day of reckoning is coming. But for those in Christ, it is not a day to fear but a day to anticipate with hope. The Sun of Righteousness has already risen in the person of Jesus Christ. He has taken the judgment we deserved upon Himself at the cross. Now His rising brings healing, restoration, and eternal life to all who trust in Him.

Reflection: The same day that brings judgment to evil brings healing and restoration to God’s people. How does Christ’s finished work change your view of judgment day? What healing do you long for?

Prayer: Almighty God, thank You that in Christ we need not fear the day of judgment but can look forward to complete healing and restoration. Come quickly, Lord Jesus. In Your Righteous Name. Amen.
