Sing to the Lord a New Song

Scripture: “Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.”
(Psalm 98.1-2, ESV)
MAIN POINT: Even as we await Christ’s return in judgment, we can sing with joy because His victory is already won.
Psalm 98 calls us to praise—not despite the coming judgment, but because of it. The same God who will one day judge the earth with righteousness is the God who has already “worked salvation” through His mighty arm. This is the glorious tension of Christian hope: we live between Christ’s first coming in humility and His second coming in glory.
At the cross and empty tomb, Christ won the decisive victory over sin, death, and evil. The enemy is defeated. The outcome is certain. Now we await the final revelation of what has already been accomplished. This is why we can sing even in dark times. This is why we can lift up our heads even as the world convulses around us.
“Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity” (Psalm 98.7-9). When Christ returns, all creation will rejoice because the righteous Judge will finally set everything right. Every wrong will be made right. Every tear will be wiped away. Every enemy will be defeated.
So even now, while we wait, we sing. We sing because we know the end of the story. We sing because Christ has already won. We sing because our redemption draws near.
Reflection: Our present praise anticipates the eternal song we will sing when Christ returns in glory. How does Christ’s victory change how you face difficulties? What new song is He giving you?
Prayer: Lord God Almighty, You have done marvelous things through Christ our Savior. Give us joy in the midst of trial and hope in the midst of uncertainty, knowing that You will make all things new. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
