Set Apart for the Gospel

Scripture: “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures” (Romans 1.1-2)
MAIN POINT: Like Paul and Joseph, we are set apart for God’s gospel purposes, not our own plans.
Paul describes himself as “set apart for the gospel.” He wasn’t in control of his calling—God was. His plans to persecute Christians were interrupted by Christ. From that moment, his life was no longer his own. He was set apart for God’s purposes.
Joseph experienced similar setting apart. His plans for quiet divorce were interrupted by an angelic dream. From that moment, his life was no longer his own. He was set apart to serve as Jesus’ adoptive father, to play a crucial role in the salvation story. Neither Paul nor Joseph asked for this. Both surrendered control and trusted God’s plan.
This is what it means to be God’s people: we are set apart for gospel purposes. Through baptism, you’ve been written into God’s redemptive story. Your life is no longer primarily about your plans or control. You’re part of the good news God is proclaiming.
Today we celebrate Christmas Day with the Divine Service, gathering as God’s set-apart people to receive Word and Sacrament. As you worship, remember you are part of the greatest story ever told.
Reflection: Being set apart for the gospel means surrendering our agendas to serve God’s redemptive purposes. In what ways has God “set you apart” from your plans for His purposes? How can your circumstances become part of the gospel you proclaim?
Prayer: Father, thank You for setting me apart through baptism to be part of Your gospel story. Help me surrender my agenda and embrace the purposes You have for me. May my life proclaim Your good news. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
