Luke 12. 15

Seeing with New Eyes

Scripture: “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Luke 12.15, ESV)

Main Point: Jesus wants to transform our vision so we see God as He truly is—the sovereign Lord of life—rather than a cosmic servant of our earthly agendas.

An artist who takes up painting discovers something remarkable—the world hasn’t changed, but her eyes have. Where she once saw ordinary weeds, she now perceives intricate patterns of light and shadow, delicate gradations of color, and beauty hidden in plain sight. The transformation isn’t in the landscape but in her vision.

Jesus wants to accomplish this same transformation in our spiritual lives. Through His parable of the rich fool, He offers us new eyes to see what truly matters. The man who approached Jesus saw Him as a divine enforcer who should guarantee his inheritance. His earthly concerns had shaped his view of God, reducing the Creator of the universe to a cosmic attorney who should serve his material interests.

We face the same temptation daily. When we pray primarily for God to bless our plans, secure our finances, or protect our comfort, we reveal that we’ve allowed our earthly circumstances to define our understanding of God’s purpose. Like looking at a sunset through sunglasses, our material concerns can filter out the brilliant reality of God’s kingdom.

Application: Examine your prayers this week. How much of your conversation with God focuses on asking Him to bless your existing plans versus seeking His kingdom purposes? Practice beginning your prayers with worship and submission to God’s will before presenting your requests.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me new eyes to see You as You truly are. Help me recognize when I’ve reduced You to a servant of my earthly plans. Transform my vision so I might perceive Your kingdom purposes in every aspect of my life. In Your Name I pray. Amen.
