Luke 20. 27

Remembering the Resurrection

Scripture: And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. (Luke 20.27)

Main Point: When we forget the resurrection, we read God’s Word only for this life, missing the promise of eternal life to come.

Our culture has shifted toward “celebrations of life” that remember wonderful things about a person’s earthly existence. While remembering is good—God works through our vocations and fills our lives with meaning—we must be careful not to forget what matters most. As we remember the life a person had, we dare not forget the life that person has in Christ.

Luke introduces the Sadducees with one defining characteristic: they “say that there is no resurrection.” Whether you actively deny the resurrection or simply forget about it in your daily life, the result is the same. You begin reading Scripture differently, focusing on promises for this world rather than the world to come. Your vision becomes earthbound, limited to what you can see and touch.

But God promises His children a resurrection from the dead and life in the Kingdom to come. This is not a comforting afterthought—this is the very heart of the Christian faith. Christ died and rose again so that we too might die and rise to eternal life. When we forget this, we lose the anchor of our hope and the foundation of our joy.

Reflection: The resurrection of the dead is not optional—it is the heartbeat of Christian hope. In what ways do you focus more on this life than the life to come? How does remembering the resurrection change the way you read Scripture and approach each day?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me never forget the resurrection. Keep my eyes fixed on the life to come, even as I faithfully serve You in this present age. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
