Rejoicing with Very Great Joy

Scripture: “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” — Matthew 2:10
MAIN POINT: Those who recognize what God has done for them in Christ respond with overwhelming joy.
Just before the Magi entered the house to see Jesus, Matthew tells us they “rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” The Greek is almost redundant in its emphasis. They did not merely feel happy. They rejoiced. Exceedingly. With great joy. Matthew piles up words to capture the intensity of their response.
These travelers had journeyed far. They had faced dangers and uncertainties. They had encountered the murderous schemes of Herod. And now, at last, they stood before the star that had led them—resting over the place where the child was. Their long journey was nearly complete. The King they sought was within reach.
Oh, that we would approach the Lord’s house with such a spirit! We who were far off have been brought near. We who were strangers have been made children. We who were without hope now have the hope of the world lying before us.
The Christ Candle may come down from the Advent wreath, but the light it represents continues to shine. The light has come into the world, and the darkness has not overcome it. That light shines for all people—Jew and Gentile, near and far, likely and unlikely. His blessings flow far as the curse is found. And the curse is found even here. Which means the blessing has reached even you.
Reflection: The Magi’s joy flowed from recognizing what they had found. What robs you of joy in your faith? How might a fresh encounter with Christ restore “exceeding great joy” in your worship?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I approach You without joy. Renew in me the wonder of what You have done. Help me worship with the same exceeding great joy as the Magi, marveling that Your blessing has reached even me. In Your glorious name. Amen.
