Prioritizing Christ Over Family

“To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, let me first go and bury my father.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’” Luke 9.59-60
Jesus’ call to a man to follow Him is met with a seemingly reasonable request: to bury his father, a duty rooted in the commandment to honor one’s parents. Yet Jesus’ response is jarring: “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.” These words are not a dismissal of family responsibilities but a declaration that His call is ultimate. The man is focused on death, but Jesus calls him to life, to proclaim the kingdom that brings resurrection. Family is a precious gift, but it cannot take precedence over the One who gives eternal life. This challenges us to examine our priorities. We may justify putting family first, believing it aligns with God’s will, but Jesus demands total allegiance. In baptism, He unites us to His death and resurrection, making us part of His family, where He is our brother and Savior. This new identity reshapes all our relationships, calling us to love our families by pointing them to Christ. Jesus’ words invite us to trust Him with our loved ones and to follow His call without delay, knowing that His kingdom offers life beyond the grave. As we reflect, let us seek courage to place Christ above all, proclaiming His gospel with boldness and faith.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family, but help me to place You first in my life. Give me courage to proclaim Your kingdom and to trust Your provision in all things. Amen.
