Matthew 6. 33

Scripture: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6.33, ESV)

Jesus’ teaching about priorities gives us practical guidance for daily life. When we “seek first” God’s kingdom – when we begin each day by listening to his Word and aligning our hearts with his purposes – everything else falls into proper perspective.

For farmers, this might mean starting the day with Scripture reading before checking weather reports. For parents, it could involve family devotions before the rush of school preparations. For busy workers, it might be taking time for prayer before diving into the day’s tasks. The key is establishing rhythms that put God’s Word at the center rather than the margins of our lives.

This isn’t about adding more religious activities to an already busy schedule. It’s about recognizing that time spent with God is not time taken away from important work – it’s the foundation that makes all our work more meaningful and sustainable. When we are rooted in God’s love and truth, we can face the day’s challenges with peace rather than anxiety.

The promise “all these things will be added to you” doesn’t mean we won’t face difficulties, but that God will provide what we need as we trust in him. This transforms our work from anxious striving to confident cooperation with God’s purposes.

Application: What practical changes could you make to “seek first” God’s kingdom in your daily routine? How might prioritizing time with God’s Word change the way you approach your work and relationships?

Prayer: Father, help us to prioritize time with you in your Word and in worship. Show us how to balance our necessary work with our need to sit at Jesus’ feet. Transform our hearts through your promises. Amen.
