Matthew 3. 15

One Step at a Time

Scripture: “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. (Matthew 3.15)

MAIN POINT: Like John, we are called to consent to following Jesus even when we cannot see the road ahead.

John consented, and immediately the heavens opened. The Spirit descended. The Father spoke. John did not know all of that was coming. He simply obeyed. And God revealed His glory.

We stand where John stood—knowing much, yet not everything. We do not know where following Jesus will lead. The farmer does not know if this will be the year of drought or abundance. The family caring for aging parents does not know how many months lie ahead. The young person does not know whether to stay close to home or venture far away.

But we know enough. Jesus is the beloved Son of God. He died for our sins and rose again. He has claimed us in baptism. He promises to work all things for good. And so, with John, we consent. We say yes to Jesus. We do the next faithful thing—checking cattle in the cold, trusting God at the kitchen table, praying for wayward children.

This is faith: not sight, not all the answers, but trusting Christ and taking the next step.

Reflection: Faith consents to follow Jesus one step at a time, trusting Him with what lies around the bend. What “next faithful thing” is Jesus calling you to do today? How can you practice consenting to His will in the week ahead?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I do not know what the future holds, but I know You hold the future. Give me faith to consent to Your will each day. With John, I say yes to Jesus. Lead me where You will. In His name. Amen.
