Scripture: John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” (Matthew 3.14)
MAIN POINT: Even with incomplete knowledge, what we do know about Jesus is enough to move us to humble worship.
John knew important things about Jesus—that He was the long-awaited Messiah, incomparably greater than himself, and without sin. These truths moved John to protest: “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
Yet John’s knowledge was incomplete. He did not understand why Jesus wanted baptism. He could not see the cross ahead or the resurrection that would follow. He did not know Jesus would commission His followers to baptize all nations.
We are in a similar position. We know Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins, and that He rose again. These truths are glorious and sufficient for faith. But there is also much we do not know—about our futures, about how God will work all things together. What we do know should humble us and move us to worship. What we do not know should drive us to trust.
Reflection: The truths we know about Jesus are enough to sustain our faith even when questions remain. What is one truth about Jesus that brings you comfort today? How does knowing Jesus is greater than your problems change your perspective?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your Son to me. When my questions multiply, anchor me in the truths I do know. Let what I understand about Jesus move me to humble worship and confident trust. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
