Morning by Morning, His Mercies Are New

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.'” (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)

Main Point: God’s grace is not a one-time event but a daily renewal that sustains us through every trial and struggle.

Living the Christian life isn’t about receiving grace once and then coasting on that grace for the rest of your life. It’s about waking up each morning to fresh mercies, renewed strength, and continued faithfulness from God. Every day brings new challenges, new temptations, new opportunities to trust in God’s grace.

When you wake up discouraged, God greets you with forgiveness. When you fall into sin, He lifts you up with His love. When you feel weak in faith, He strengthens you through His Word and Sacraments. This isn’t because you’ve earned it or because you’ve been particularly good—it’s because His love never ceases and His mercies never come to an end.

This daily renewal of grace is what makes the narrow way possible. We don’t have to make it through the entire journey on our own strength. We just have to make it through today, trusting in today’s portion of grace. Tomorrow will bring its own challenges, but it will also bring its own fresh supply of God’s mercy and strength. The prophet Jeremiah wrote these words during one of the darkest periods in Israel’s history, yet even in suffering, he could declare that God’s mercies are new every morning.

Application: Begin each day by consciously receiving God’s fresh mercies and trusting in His daily provision of grace. How do you typically start your mornings? What fresh mercy does God have for you today?

Prayer:
Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and help me trust in today’s portion of grace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
