Mission in Relationships

“The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.” (John 1.35-37)

MAIN POINT: God works through our ordinary relationships to draw people to Jesus.

When we think about evangelism, we often imagine dramatic conversions—fishermen abandoning their nets, tax collectors leaving their booths, miraculous moments of divine intervention. But John’s Gospel shows us something different. Two disciples follow Jesus not because of a miracle, but because their teacher, John the Baptist, pointed them to Christ. One relationship led to another. One connection became the pathway to faith.

This is both frightening and exciting. Frightening because it means mission isn’t something distant, happening somewhere else through more qualified people. It’s happening right here, through you, in your everyday relationships. Exciting because it means you don’t need special training or supernatural signs. You simply need to be faithful in pointing others to Jesus through the relationships God has already given you.

Your co-worker, your neighbor, your friend from the gym—these aren’t interruptions to your spiritual life. They are your mission field. The mundane routines of your life are the very places where God’s grace flows through you to others.

Reflection: The people in your daily life aren’t there by accident but by divine appointment. Consider how your ordinary relationships might be the very channels through which God wants to work. Who has God placed in your path this week? How might your faithfulness in these everyday connections become part of God’s larger mission?

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see the people You’ve placed in my life not as interruptions but as divine appointments. Help me to faithfully point others to You through my words and actions. Use my ordinary relationships for Your extraordinary purposes. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
