James 5.10- 11

Making Space for Others

Scripture: “As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.” (James 5.10-11)

MAIN POINT: Creating a community where people can honestly share their doubts without fear of judgment is essential to faithful Christian living.

James points to the prophets as examples of patient suffering—and John the Baptist certainly qualifies. But notice what James doesn’t say: he doesn’t claim the prophets never questioned or doubted. Instead, he commends their steadfastness through suffering. John remained steadfast enough to send messengers to Jesus with his honest question. He didn’t abandon his mission; he sought clarity while continuing to trust. The church needs to become a place where such honest steadfastness is honored rather than condemned.

If you’re a parent, let your children know they can ask hard questions. If you’re a friend, don’t offer pat answers when someone shares their struggles. If you’re part of a faith community, commit to being a place where people can say “I’m struggling to believe right now” without fear of judgment. We must stop being the church that drives people away with false certainty. When we create space for honest questions, we follow Jesus’ example. He didn’t rebuke John for doubting—He honored the question with a thoughtful answer and then praised John as the greatest prophet ever born. Real community means supporting one another through doubts, not pretending we have all the answers.

Reflection: The strength of our faith community is measured by how safely people can bring their honest doubts and questions. Who in your life needs permission to voice their doubts, and how can you create that safe space? What would change in your faith community if everyone felt free to share their honest struggles?

Prayer: Gracious God, forgive me for offering quick answers instead of patient listening. Help me create spaces where others can honestly share their doubts. Make our church a place of authentic faith. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
