From Peace to Joy

Scripture: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15.13, ESV)
MAIN POINT: The peace of Christ’s kingdom naturally overflows into joy as we prepare to celebrate Gaudete Sunday.
This week we have meditated on the peace that comes when the Kingdom of Heaven draws near. We’ve heard John’s call to repentance and explored what it means to live as citizens of Christ’s humble reign. Now, as we prepare for tomorrow’s Third Sunday in Advent, we discover that peace and joy are inseparable companions in God’s kingdom.
St. Paul connects them beautifully: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.” Notice the order—joy and peace flow from believing, from trusting God’s promises. When we truly grasp that Heaven’s King has come near in mercy, when we experience His forgiveness and know His reign extends over all things, how can we not rejoice?
Tomorrow we light the third Advent candle—the candle of Joy. Gaudete, the Latin word for “rejoice,” gives this Sunday its name. But this joy is not superficial happiness dependent on circumstances. It’s the deep, abiding joy that comes from knowing we are reconciled to God through Christ. It’s the joy of forgiven sinners, the joy of adopted children, the joy of those who have tasted the peace of God’s kingdom and found it good.
As you prepare for worship tomorrow, carry with you all you’ve learned this week about peace. Let that peace become the foundation for joy. The same King who brings peace also brings joy—not fleeting pleasure, but eternal gladness rooted in His unchanging love.
Reflection: The progression from peace to joy mirrors the Christian life—first reconciliation with God, then the deep gladness that flows from that restored relationship. How has experiencing Christ’s peace this week prepared your heart to rejoice? What specific reasons for joy will you bring to worship tomorrow?
Prayer: God of hope, fill me with all joy and peace through believing in Your promises. As I have meditated on Your kingdom’s peace this week, now prepare my heart to rejoice. Help me worship tomorrow with the gladness that comes from knowing I am Yours. Through Christ, who is our peace and our joy, Amen.
