Far As the Curse Is Found

Scripture: “He comes to make His blessings flow, far as the curse is found.” — Isaac Watts, “Joy to the World”
MAIN POINT: God’s blessing in Christ reaches everywhere the curse of sin has touched.
How far has the curse of sin reached? The answer is simple and sobering: everywhere. It has touched every nation, every people, every heart. There is no corner of creation that remains untouched by the brokenness that entered the world through Adam’s fall. From the grandest empire to the smallest village, from the most powerful ruler to the humblest servant, the curse has found its way.
But here is the good news of Epiphany: God’s blessing in Christ goes precisely where the curse has gone. The coming of the Magi to worship Jesus demonstrates this truth in vivid color. These strange visitors from the east—immersed in paganism and the dark arts—found themselves drawn by a star to bow before a child in Bethlehem. If the curse had reached them in their distant land, so too did the blessing.
This is the pattern of God’s grace. He does not wait for us to come to Him. He pursues us into the darkness. He sends His light into our night. As Isaiah proclaimed, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60.1). The light shines precisely where the darkness is deepest.
Reflection: God’s grace pursues us into our darkest places. Where in your life do you need to receive afresh the light of Christ? How does knowing that no darkness is beyond God’s reach change how you view your struggles?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank You that Your blessing reaches even to me. Shine Your light into the dark places of my life and world. Help me trust that no corner of creation is beyond Your grace. In Your holy name. Amen.
