Drawing Near or Standing Back

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” (Luke 15.1-2)
Main Point: Our response to Jesus reveals the condition of our heart – we either draw near in humility or stand back in pride.
Picture Jesus walking down Topeka Street in Lyndon, stopping at True Brew Coffee House. The broken and struggling press close to hear His words, while the religious elite stand outside with crossed arms, shaking their heads in disapproval. Two dramatically different responses to the same Savior.
Which group would you find yourself in? The tax collectors and sinners recognized their need and drew near to Jesus with humble hearts. The Pharisees and scribes, confident in their own righteousness, grumbled at His grace toward others. Their offense wasn’t just that Jesus received sinners, but that He openly shared meals with them – scandalous behavior in their eyes!
In our small Kansas communities, we know everyone’s story. When we see someone struggling return to church, or when grace is extended to those we might consider “less deserving,” what’s our first response? Do we draw near with gratitude for God’s mercy, or do we stand back and grumble?
Reflection: Jesus welcomes all who come to Him with humble hearts, regardless of their past. Questions for Meditation: When have I stood back and grumbled at God’s grace toward others? What keeps me from drawing near to Jesus with complete humility?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me approach You not with pride in my own goodness, but with humble recognition of my need for Your grace. Soften my heart toward others who seek You, just as You have shown mercy to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
