Called Right Where You Are

SCRIPTURE: “While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'” (Matthew 4.18-19)
MAIN POINT: Jesus calls disciples not by taking them far from their daily lives, but by transforming the ordinary places where they already live and work.
Peter and Andrew weren’t in the temple when Jesus called them. They were at work, doing what fishermen do—casting nets. James and John were mending nets with their father. Jesus found them in the middle of ordinary life and called them right there. He didn’t need to search the ends of the earth for disciples. He called the people He lived among.
This reveals something crucial about discipleship. You might think following Jesus requires abandoning your daily responsibilities or making some dramatic change. But notice: these men did eventually leave their nets, but later we find them back at Peter’s house, eating a meal. They didn’t stop being fishermen; they became fishermen who followed Jesus.
Your call to discipleship happens right where you are. At your job, in your home, in your community. Jesus doesn’t need you to go far to find Him—He comes to you in your ordinary, everyday places. The question isn’t whether you can drop everything, but whether you’ll let Him transform how you live right where you are.
REFLECTION: Discipleship isn’t about escaping our ordinary lives but about allowing Jesus to transform them. What would it look like for Jesus to transform your ordinary, daily routines into opportunities for Kingdom work?
PRAYER: Lord, thank You for calling me right where I am. Help me see my ordinary work, relationships, and daily interactions as the very places where You’re calling me to be Your disciple. Transform my ordinary into Your extraordinary. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
