A Moment of Intimacy

Scripture: “And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.'” (Luke 23.42-43)
MAIN POINT: At His lowest moment, Jesus extends His highest promise to an undeserving sinner.
In the midst of public execution and mockery, something extraordinary happens. One criminal makes two confessions. First, a confession of sin: “We indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds.” He admits he deserves death. Then, a confession of faith: “But this man has done nothing wrong.” He sees what others cannot—that Jesus is innocent and righteous.
This criminal has nothing to offer. No good works. No religious credentials. No time to prove himself. Just a simple prayer: “Jesus, remember me.” And to this dying prayer, Jesus responds with an immediate promise: “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Not someday. Not after you’ve cleaned up your life. Today.
This is the Gospel in miniature. A true sinner meets his true Savior. What we see in this moment is what Jesus came to do—to seek and save the lost. The criminal couldn’t save himself. He could only throw himself on Jesus’ mercy. And that was enough. It’s always enough.
Reflection: If Jesus could save this criminal in his final breaths, He can save anyone—including you. What does this criminal’s confession teach you about coming to Jesus? How does the immediacy of Jesus’ promise comfort you?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am like that criminal—I have nothing to offer but my sin and my need. Remember me. Save me. Bring me into Your kingdom. Thank You for Your immediate promise of paradise. In Your Name, Amen.
